Trout In The Classroom
TIC is made possible by a unique partnership between the Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited (PATU) and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC), Pennsylvania Trout In the Classroom (PA TIC) is an interdisciplinary environmental education program in which students (grades K-12) learn about current and past impacts, management, and protection and enhancement opportunities of Pennsylvania’s watersheds and coldwater resources, while raising trout in the classroom. Throughout the year, students are introduced to the importance of watershed conservation efforts, ecosystems, habitats, natural resources, and management strategies to protect and enhance coldwater resources. They are also introduced to recreational opportunities in which they can enjoy those resources and to the coldwater fish species that call those waters home.
Muddy Creek Trout Unlimited has been proud to participate in Trout in the Classroom (TIC) program since first getting involved in 2015. Through partnerships formed with local schools, TIC allows students to raise trout in their classrooms and learn about cold water conservation. The program brings nature directly to the students and provides an opportunity for them to gain hands-on experience with the life cycle of trout. As the trout grow, students learn about the responsible management of our watershed. The students eventually participate in a release day where the trout are released into the Muddy Creek watershed. Currently, Muddy Creek Trout Unlimited sponsors 5 classrooms across 4 York County School Districts helping over 1,000 kids make the connections between their curriculums, nature and understanding the need to be good stewards of our natural resources. As a chapter we’re very proud of our continued support of these partnerships and the impact TIC is making in our community.
